Fun in the Karsts: Lights and Comorants

What do old men with long beards and the olympics have in common?  They both are related to night activities in Yangshou.   One night we went out with an old man whose family raised cormorants (a swimming black bird) to fish with.  By raising the birds from chicks and rewarding their fishing activity with their own food, the old man is able to tie the birds necks with rope preventing them from swallowing the fish they catch and then spit it out into a bucket.  As you might imagine, this being not the most efficient way to fish, it is not done any more except for tourists, but it was very fun to watch....  The next night we went to a light show staged in a large lake that involved 100's of people, boats, 100 children and a line of 200 people wearing lights on their bodies holding hands in the dark...all staged by the same man who designed the Beijing olympics.  Truly beautiful art.
